Vosloorus residents encouraged to report abuse

As part of their celebration of 16 Days of Activism of no Abuse Against Women and Children, Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) held their campaign to raise awareness against all forms of abuse against women and children.

The celebration took place at Thuthuzela Care Centre in Vosloorus on November 27. It was held in partnership with other stakeholders which included the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Family and Child Service, Department of Social Development, You Get Comfort in One Place, Social Crime, EMPD, SAPS and Ekupholeni Mental Health and Trauma Centre.

In her interview with Kathorus MAIL, TCC operational manager Sr Rainy Radapa said the phenomenon of women and children abuse was on the increase.

Radapa, who works from the Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus, said efforts must be made to curb the scourge.

“I am saying this based on the increased number of sexually assaulted children and adults who come to our offices for help. Together with the other stakeholders, we would like to say enough is enough. We meet at Mahlathini Park today to interact with residents to give them more information on what to do if they find themselves in abusive environments,” said Radapa.

She said they have six centres that help abused people in Ekurhuleni.

“We have centres in various areas including Germiston’s Bertha Gxowa Hospital, Daveyton Care Centre, Tsakane Care Centre, Far East Rand Care Centre, Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital and Tembisa Care Centre. In all these centres we offer help. And we don’t charge for the services we render,” explained Radapa.

TCC intervenes in cases that include domestic violence, sexual assault, child neglect, child abuse and the abuse of elderly people.

Radapa added there were men who are sexually abused but do not report the abuse because they think they will be laughed at. “At TCC we encourage everyone to report abuse because we do not judge people.”

Radapa said the event was a success. It attracted 150 participants.

She said they offer services not only to Vosloorus residents but to all residents in the Kathorus area who need them.
