The learners earned the top spot in three categories, taking awards as goal scorer of the year, footballer of the year and the goalkeeper of the year awards.

Intokozo Primary School in Katlehong rewarded their learners with trophies, medals and certificates, for putting the school on the sporting map in different sporting codes in 2018.

The award ceremony took place at the school’s premises at Ncala Section on November 15.

School principal Zenzele Mazibuko said the learners who received the awards on the day helped to fly the school’s flag by representing the school well in various parts of the country.

“Some of the learners took part in the Macdonald’s Soccer Tournament in the u-14 tourney at Eden Park Sports grounds in September.

“Our learners reached the semi-finals stage of the competition. Our under-14 team was the only primary school in the township to reach the semi-final stage.

“We also made good progress in athletics, achieving success at the district level of the Cross Country Challenge.

“I am proud of some of our learners who took part at the Ekurhuleni South School’s Basketball League. In this category we achieved position three in league standing,” said the proud principal.

In soccer, the school did well. The learners earned the top spot in three categories, taking awards as goal scorer of the year, footballer of the year and the goalkeeper of the year awards.

The top goal scorer award was taken by Nkosinathi Mthembu with the footballer of the year award snapped by Gumbi Nhlakanipho. Khayelihle Mtshali went home with the goalkeeper of the year award.

Mazibuko said the school was proud of the learners, and the dedication they displayed in achieving success.

“I also wish to thank the office of the premier in Gauteng for sponsoring our ceremony and donating trophies. Local businesses, including the local owner of a bus company, donated R1 000 with the owner of a construction company responsible for the renovation of our school donating R1 000 towards the purchase of trophies and the printing of certificates awarded to successful performers,” Mazibuko said.

Mazibuko thanked the parents for working with the SGB (school governing body) towards contributing to the success of the ceremony.
