The South African Weather Service has asked residents to be prepared for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall today (Thursday).

The service released the following warnings:
- Severe Thunderstorms
Severe thunderstorms with the possibility of heavy downpours, localised flooding and hail are expected in parts of Gauteng.
These storms are expected to hit the province between noon and 11pm.
- Heavy rain
Heavy rain is expected over parts of the province which may lead to flooding.

After days of scorching hot weather the rain will bring some relief with temperatures expected to drop to the high teens and low twenties heading into the weekend.
Motorists are reminded to take the necessary precautions when travelling in wet weather.
They are encouraged to reduce speed and increase their following distances and headlights should be kept on at all times to increase visibility.
Residents should also ensure that they shelter their pets.
