Ekurhuleni reaffirms commitment to people with disabilities

Council resolved that in the construction of houses and fully serviced stands, the Department of Human Settlements must ensure that special needs, such as wheelchair ramps and paraplegic ablution facilities, are accommodated.

The ANC Ekurhuleni caucus welcomed the metro’s decision to give special consideration to people with disabilities when building and allocating housing.

This motion was passed at the ordinary council meeting held at the Germiston Civic Centre on October 25.

The ANC caucus reaffirmed its commitment to aim to build 100 000 houses and give away 59 000 serviced stands to qualifying Ekurhuleni residents.

“The ANC caucus believes that the resolutions taken by council speak directly to the spirit of Thuma Mina, of ensuring that people with special needs are also equal beneficiaries of government programmes and services.

“This further says the city will ensure that there is special consideration in allocating decent human settlements to the elderly and people with disability, including the beneficiaries of houses who have been waiting for their allocation since 1996,” said councillor Jongizizwe Dlabathi, chief whip of council.

Council resolved that in the construction of houses and fully serviced stands, the Department of Human Settlements must ensure that special needs, such as wheelchair ramps and paraplegic ablution facilities, are accommodated.

The ANC caucus said: “Our commitment to an obligation to build sustainable and decent human settlements in a manner that also benefits disabled residents is a standing commitment.”
