Hard-working detective solves three cases in one month

Communications officer at Vosloorus Police Station Capt Piet Rossouw said they are proud to have such a dedicated detective at their station.

Detective Const Nomsa Nkosi, based at Vosloorus Police Station, made three successful arrests and convictions in August as a result of her hard work.

In the three arrests, the suspects received heavy sentences in prison.

In Nkosi’s first successful case (house break-in and theft), the suspect, Kutloane Nkatha (18), broke into a house in Extension Nine in Vosloorus and stole a Samsung laptop worth R9 000, two Canon cameras worth R7 000 and R2 000 and an external hard drive. All goods were stolen during the day while the complainant, Jacobeth More, was still at work.

Nkosi said the complainant opened the case on February 12 at the Vosloorus Police Station.

“The case was assigned to me and I immediately resumed investigation. While investigating the case, I made a good relationship with people from Ext Nine who really wanted the suspect behind the bars. I got numerous tip-offs from the community members. I trusted my sources.

“As a result, I arrested the suspect in May. Because of the good evidence I provided to the magistrate’s court in Vosloorus, the suspect was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment on August 7,” said a proud Nkosi.

The soft-spoken and hardworking detective also added that: “The fingerprint experts helped the case a lot as they connected Nkatha to the case and provided solid proof that he is the one who committed the crime.”

The investigation also proved Nkatha was not a first-time offender.

In the second case, also a house break-in and theft, suspect Thokozani Dlamini (24) broke into a house in Ext 28 and stole a Sony flat screen television set with its remote control worth around R3 000.

This happened on March 1, 2014, while the complainant, Themba Nkosi, was asleep. He woke up and realised some of his things in the house were missing.

Nkosi said the case was opened the same day.

“All leads were followed but unfortunately no arrest was made,” said Nkosi, who was working at a crime office then.

She said she started to investigate dockets in 2016.

Nkosi said the case was assigned to her on July 1, 2018.

“I was the third detective to work on the same case. I started to do my investigation and I learnt the suspect was already in police custody for a different case and was linked to the crime in Ext 28 with fingerprints. I went to the police cells on August 1 and charged him there,” said the detective.

Nkosi said because there were so many cases associated with Dlamini, he had to do a plea bargain between himself and the public prosecutor.

“The two parties negotiated for a lesser sentence because the suspect was related to the complainant. As a result, on August 28, Dlamini was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for house break-in only,” Nkosi explained.

Because of successfully solving three crimes in August, Nkosi was named the Best Detective of the Month by the police station.

Communications officer at Vosloorus Police Station Capt Piet Rossouw said they are proud to have such a dedicated detective at their station.

“The whole station, the station commander, as well as the Vosloorus community, are proud to have such a dedicated soul in our midst,” concludes Rossouw.

Nkosi said there is a third case she worked hard on in August where the suspect was sentenced many years, but could not give out details as she misplaced the docket of that particular case.
