Brave officers follow suspicious-looking vehicles

Communications officer at Vosloorus SAPS Capt Piet Rossouw said two Vosloorus SAPS members, WO Dlezakhe Danisa and Capt Alson Mhlanga, were busy patrolling along Bierman Road in Vosloorus on August 14 when they spotted a suspicious-looking white Ford Ranger at around 1.45am.

“The men in blue from Vosloorus followed the car with four occupants in it to Vumbuka Informal Settlement next to Sotho Hostel. Immediately at Vumbuka Informal Settlement the vehicle suddenly stopped and occupants began to fire shots at the police. The police got out of the car while in motion, took cover and retaliated,” said Rossouw.

“Danisa was shot in the left shoulder during crossfire and was rushed to hospital where he is currently being treated for the gunshot wound. The Ford Ranger speed away and it is not known if any suspects were shot as their vehicle was hit with quite a number of bullets,” Rossouw explained.

He went on to mention that the police vehicle came to a standstill in a ditch next to a shack.

“The police vehicle is slightly damaged and has a bullet hole on the left corner of the windscreen. Luckily none of the informal settlement dwellers were hurt.”

Rossouw said the AK 47 and R5 spent cartridges were found on the scene.

Brig Themba Denge, the Vosloorus SAPS station commander, praised the brave members.

“We thank God for being with the police, that is why they survived. We also can’t take away the bravery they have shown. It means the men in blue are serious about keeping the community safe.

“I would like to plead with anyone who might have information about the vehicle to come forward and report to the police, or alternatively contact Lt Col David Nxumalo, the acting detective commander,” said Denge.

Nxumalo can be contacted at the following number 082 3199 491 or crime line 08600 10111 or SMS on 32211.
