The murder occurred on Empangeni Street in Palm Ridge on May 26 at 9pm.
Const Sivenkosi Mtwa, the corporate communications officer at the Katlehong SAPS, said: “It is alleged a man murdered his wife before he was attacked by community members who stoned him until he succumbed to death.”
He said the husband used a sharp object to stab his wife in the upper body.
“Both husband and wife were certified dead on the scene by paramedics,” Mtwa said.
Mtwa said the police has condemned the community members for taking the law into their own hands.
“We plead with the community to assist the police in putting criminals behind bars and not to sentence criminals themselves. We can not fight crime by committing crime,” said Mtwa.
The reason behind the husband killing his wife is still unknown.
Detectives will investigate two murder cases – the wife killed by her husband and the husband killed by community members (mob justice).
