The upward trend in cash-in-transit heists and taxi violence in the country has prompted the parliament’s portfolio committee on police to call for the deployment of more specialised units to deal with the current scourge of cash-in-transit heists and taxi violence in the country.
The committee’s chairperson, Francois Beukman said, in a statement, “The SAPS Task Team, Tactical Response Team and National Intervention Unit should be strategically deployed to ensure that the increase in taxi violence and cash-in-transit heists are dealt with comprehensively.
“Close co-operation and collaboration between the SAPS and security companies are also of vital importance.”
Beukman said the killing of a young learner in KwaZulu-Natal in the cross-fire of a cash-in-transit robbery is an indication that extraordinary steps are required from law-enforcement agencies to deal with the current situation.
The portfolio committee on police conveys its sincere condolences to the bereaved family and community members.
“The National Development Plan is very clear that technology should be used optimally by the police service to deal with crime effectively,” he said.
Beukman called on members of the public to also play their role of being the eyes and ears of the police.
