Metro officers nabbed for bribery

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s media division issued a statement following the arrest of two of their officers on a charge of bribery on May 11.

According to the statement, on Friday afternoon around 2pm at the intersection of Khotso and Hospital roads in Katlehong, a truck driver was stopped by two male officers in full uniform driving a marked vehicle.

The truck driver alleged the officers informed him that the documentation he produced was not in order and the officers then demanded a bribe of R1 000 to let him go. The driver, however, managed to contact the EMPD Internal Affairs Unit who in turn informed members of the Hawks.

A location for the delivery of the bribe was agreed upon and the two officers were arrested around 4.40pm. The two arrested officers are stationed in the Alberton Precinct and their Friday shift commenced at 6am and ended at 2pm.

They decided to go beyond their area and well after their knock-off time to solicit bribes.

Marked notes amounting to the solicited amount of R1 000 were handed to the officers at the agreed upon location in Katlehong by the driver. Immediately thereafter, the two metro police officers were stopped, handcuffed and detained at the Katlehong North Police Station after the marked notes were seized.

The arrested officers, who are both in their late 30s, will face charges of corruption and extortion at the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
