Electricity to Ncala to be restored tonight

The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mzwandile Masina, has announced a resolution to end the ongoing impasse between community members in Katlehong and Eskom.

The mayor hosted a meeting between local leaders in Ncala Section, Eskom, government stakeholders and the City of Ekurhuleni on May 16. The mayor successfully persuaded Eskom to return power to the area after a lengthy political engagement with the various stakeholders.

Establishing a way out of the current protests that have turned the area into an unruly service delivery protests, a task team will be set up to oversee all Eskom operations going forward and it will be constituted of representatives from the community, the City of Ekurhuleni and Eskom.

The forum has also undertaken to conduct a series of public participation meetings during the course of this month. The objective of the public meetings is to educate the community in the area on the rollout of the split metering project, the benefits of the system and gadget demonstrations.

“We are happy that we have been able to reach a resolution to this ongoing impasse in Ncala Section, Katlehong. On behalf of the City of Ekurhuleni, we would like to thank the community of Ncala for their patience during this period. My administration remains committed to running a pro-poor government to accelerating service delivery in our communities. We hope life will be restored to normality for the citizens of Katlehong,” explained Masina.

At the end of the gathering, the mayor thanked the minister of public enterprise, Pravin Gordhan, and Gauteng premier David Makhura for their participation in the mediation process. Eskom has restored the power to Ncala Section on May 16.
