Police conduct weekend crime blitz

In an effort to rid local areas of crime, Ekurhuleni West Cluster police stations embarked on crime prevention activities in various policing precincts over the weekend of April 6 to 8, 2018.

A total of 79 suspects were arrested and charged at various police stations, namely, Alberton, Bedfordview, Brackendowns, Eden Park, Elsburg, Germiston, Primrose, Katlehong North and South, Thokoza, Vosloorus and Zonkizizwe.

The police activity included stop-and-search operations.

The suspects were arrested for various crimes, such as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery, kidnapping, murder, possession of dagga, house break-in and theft, malicious damage to property, shoplifting, and driving under the influence.

Three of the suspects, aged between 22 and 29 years, were arrested on April 7 at about 3pm for theft. A 37-year-old shopkeeper, who was alone in his shop when the three suspects (known to him) arrived, told the police that they forcefully removed stock before fleeing the scene on foot. Police confirmed that a case was opened and that the suspects were traced to a house in Zone 3 and arrested.

All the suspects are expected to appear in various courts in the cluster soon.
