Rape suspect nabbed by police

A 49-year-old rape suspect was arrested by Thokoza SAPS at Romokonopi Section in Katlehong on March 21.

The communications official at Thokoza SAPS, Capt Buyisile Mvela, said three children – a girl (5) and two boys aged eight and 10 – were on the way from the local church to collect food parcels.

“It is alleged that a stranger saw them passing by his house and called them into the house. Without suspecting anything, the children went to the stranger’s house. Upon their arrival, the stranger ordered the two boys to sit in the sitting room and took the five-year-old girl to his bedroom where he raped her,” said Capt Mvelase.

She said after the rape the man gave her R1 and then gave the two boys R5 each and told them not to mention anything to anyone.

“At night the little girl, who started having nightmares, screamed out the man’s name. Her mother woke her up and questioned her about the man. The girl managed to tell her mother the story. The mother took her child to a hospital where she was observed and a rape was confirmed. The rape case was opened for investigation,” Mvelase told Kathorus MAIL.

She added that members of the tracing unit in Katlehong were following up information about a man dealing in dagga.

“Between Ramokonopi and Mofokeng Sections where the rape occurred, the tracing unit noticed a group of people assaulting an unknown man. When they arrived, they rescued the man from the angry community members. It is alleged that the man who was being beaten by the community members was the 49-year-old who is accused of raping the five-year-old girl,” said Mvelase.

She went on to add that the suspect was then taken to a local hospital and is under the police guard.
