ACTT celebrates Human Rights Day

Accountancy Community Through Tirisano (ACTT) held a Human Rights Day celebration event at Mpontsheng Secondary School in Katlehong on March 24.

ACTT is the academy that offers extra lessons to high school learners from around Kathorus area. The extra lessons take place every Sunday at Mpontsheng Secondary School.

The event was divided into two sessions – performances and sports. In sports such as soccer and netball, learners attending the academy played against learners who do not attend the academy.

Both sets of learners, as well as their parents, blessed the event with their presence.

The founder, Enett Mokoena, who is also the director and the chairperson of the academy board, said the purpose of the event was to teach children from the academy and from the community at large about human rights in a funny and entertaining way.

“We also want the community to know that we exist and what we are doing to help children in the community.

“We want to teach them not to abuse their rights. At the same time we want to teach parents not to suppress their children but to allow their children to showcase their talents,” said Mokoena.

In performances learners were given an opportunity to showcase their talents in the form of sport, drama, public speaking, music, poetry as well as a debate. They used the above-mentioned entertainment to express their views about human rights.

Three teams took part in the soccer and netball tournament. They included learners from KwaDukathole, Mpontsheng Secondary School and the ACTT squad that was formed on the day.

In the soccer finals, KwaDukathole Secondary School defeated Mpontsheng Secondary School 4-0 while in the netball finals an ACTT squad played against Mpontsheng Secondary School and defeated them 8-5.

The winners of the finals were awarded the first prize trophy and gold medals, while the second place finishers were awarded runner-up prizes of silver medals.
