Katlehong protest action warning

The Katlehong SAPS has alerted the public to a warning it has received about a mass protest action planned for this Friday, March 9.

Although the police cannot confirm the source or grouping behind the planned protest, they are warning residents to stay alert and steer clear of potential trouble spots. Residents are also advised to make arrangements in case free movement is affected and people find it difficult to get to work or school.

According to Capt Mega Ndobe, spokesperson for the Katlehong SAPS, the protest will be about the prepaid electricity implementation phase and is expected to affect all suburbs of Katlehong.

Ndobe said it is likely to be a mass event either starting or ending at the Katlehong municipal offices, where Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina is expected to receive a memorandum of demands from the protesters.

Ndobe said the police will be on hand to ensure the safety of citizens and protection of their property. “The police will not intervene unless the protesters put people’s lives in danger or threaten to cause damage to property,” he said.
