Mvelase said the purpose of the visit was to give the learners information and advice about avoiding rape, and also to address issues like bullying and substance abuse that the school is experiencing.
“Learners at a young age need to know what rape is, how it happens and how it can be prevented,” Mvelase said. “Some are raped and they don’t even know that they have been raped because they do not know what can be described as rape.”
She said there are many cases in which young girls are raped but their rapists do not go to court because they are bread-winners.
“After the motivational talk learners will know how to deal with such issues. They will know how to prevent rape because prevention is better than cure.”
Mvelase said they are planning to use different media houses to raise awareness against rape.
The issues of bullying and substance abuse were also addressed on the day. “We tackled mostly the effects of bullying and substance abuse,” said Mvelase.
