Men arrested for being found in possession of unlicensed firearm

Two men aged 24 and 38 were arrested in Katlehong on February 18 for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The arrest was made during the joint operation between the Katlehong Crime Prevention Unit and Katlehong detectives.

Communication official at the Katlehong Police Station, Capt Mega Ndobe, said Katlehong detectives were tracing wanted suspects according to their dockets.

“It is alleged that the police while patrolling at Buyafuthi Hostel Block A, received information from the community that two suspects were in possession of illegal firearms. The police went to the given address in Block A at the hostel and indeed found the suspects inside a bakkie,” said Ndobe.

He said the police requested to search the occupants and the vehicle. “Two occupants were found in possession of two 9mm pistols and were seized and the suspects were arrested for unlawful possession of firearms,” said Ndode.

Ndobe added that the police are investigating whether the same firearms were used in any crime in the country. “The weapons were taken to ballistics for further investigation,” Ndobe said.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

The investigation is on-going.
