Four arrested for car theft and fraud

A gang of four suspicious-looking men driving a vehicle with false number plates were arrested by members of the EMPD on Comet Road in Boksburg on February 9.

According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the EMPD, Kaizer Kasago, the vehicle was spotted along Comet Road in Boksburg by the EMPD’s Community Liaison Unit. On noticing they had been spotted by the EMPD Unit, the Honda Ballade made a U-turn in an attempt to avoid the police.

The Community Liaison Unit members ran the number plate, which came out as a Honda Ballade with a different color. And while searching the vehicle, the metro police came across tools used for house break-ins.

A thorough check of the vehicle revealed missing tags in the engine compartment as well as scraped off chassis and engine numbers. It also emerged that the number plates of the vehicle were false.

The rightful owner of the gold Honda from Vosloorus, whose number plates were falsely cloned and displayed on the suspects’ silver-grey Honda Ballade, was called and he confirmed that his vehicle was safe with him.

The recovered vehicle was taken to the SAPS Van Ryn pound in Benoni for more in-depth investigations. All four occupants of the stolen Honda Ballade who claimed they were from Soweto and aged between 28 and 35, were detained at the Boksburg Police Station on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and fraud.

They are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
