Couple arrested for illegal tavern and drugs

A man and his wife were among the first couple to be arrested for dealing in drugs and operating an illegal tavern during an anti-drug operation conducted by the EMPD Drug Law Enforcement Unit and the SAPS Crime Intelligence in Eden Park last Wednesday.

The unnamed couple, who were later escorted by the police out of their home with their hands cuffed behind their backs, was among the first “husband and wife” suspects to be arrested in the joint police anti-drug and crime raid. Acting on reliable information supplied by members of the community, the anti-crime teams swooped in on the unsuspecting occupants of the house in Studebaker Street and found a haul of drugs and illicit liquor.

These include 80 ziplock bags of Cat with an estimated value of R1 600. Alcohol valued at approximately R3 400 was also seized from the property as the couple failed to produce a liquor licence to operate a liquor business. Cash amounting to R1 040, which was suspected to be proceeds from the illicit trade, was also confiscated by the police.

The arrested couple, aged 45 and 48, were detained at Eden Park Police Station on charges of possession and dealing in illicit substances as well as operating a tavern without a liquor licence. They are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
