Ekurhuleni ANC Caucus congratulates Connie Chiume on her star role in an international film

The ANC caucus in Ekurhuleni issued a congratulatory statement to the award-winning actress Connie Chiume.

Chiume was congratulated by the chief whip for her leading role in the latest international movie – The Black Panther that is directed by the well-known movie director Ryan Coogler.

Chiume, who resides in Kempton Park, continues to fly the city’s flag high on the international platform.

She will be performing alongside renowned Hollywood actors, the likes of Forest Whitaker, Lupita Ny’ongo, Angela Bassett, Michael B Jordan and Ugandan actress Florence Kasumba. She will also star alongside two other South African performers, namely John Kani and his son Atandwa.

Last year, chief whip Clr Jongizizwe Dlabathi hosted her and fellow colleagues at a gala dinner at the Germiston Banquet Hall to celebrate her 40th anniversary in the entertainment industry.

“We congratulate her on her continuous sterling job in the performing arts. Furthermore, we would like to make a call for unity, particularly among the creatives in Ekurhuleni to generally work together to bring radical economic transformation to the industry,” Dlabathi said.

The film is set to hit theatres on February 16 in the US and SA.

Chiume, who is a seasoned actress, has appeared in many local TV series such as Shaka Zulu, Zone 14 and Rhythm City, as well as the 2004 Country of my Skull film, in which she played alongside Samuel L. Jackson.

Speaking on how she got her role, Chiume said she did not know what she was auditioning for. “Auditions were held in Africa, the Caribbean and in other parts of the world, but it was kept a secret,” Chiume said.

She said the role was secret in such a way that she was not told what she was auditioning for. It was not even stated what specific gender the role was for.

“I was just given lines to read and that was it.

“A few weeks after auditioning, I received a call saying I had been cast in Black Panther. However, I did not get excited about the call,” she said.

She said when her colleagues showed her on the internet that the role she had landed was a huge role, that is when she became excited.
