Bright future made possible by city bursaries

Ekurhuleni’s executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, awarded full bursaries to 220 top achieving learners who matriculated last year.

These learners were selected from various high schools around Ekurhuleni.

The bursary scheme provides financial assistance to academically gifted, needy learners, enabling them to pursue their tertiary studies at a university or academic institution of their choice and paving the way for fulfilling careers.

The bursary scheme covers the bursary holders’ full registration fees,

examination fees and tuition materials, including the full amount for

all prescribed textbooks, as well as accommodation and other related

expenses subject to approval by the city’s bursary committee.

Speaking at the annual Academic Excellence Award ceremony at Emperors Palace on Thursday, January 24, Masina congratulated Ekurhuleni’s 2017 Grade 12 top achievers on making the city proud.

“It is your victory against all odds that makes today’s event a special one. We commend all of you for a job well done and encourage you to maintain your spirit of hard work, dedication and commitment,” said Masina.

The mayor added that he was proud to say that during his tenure as mayor no academically deserving child would be denied an education because of their family circumstances. The mayor also touched on the recent government announcement about free education.

He noted that his administration had increased the city’s bursary fund from R10-million to R100-m.

He added that he remained committed to his team’s mission to lay the groundwork for the establishment of the city’s first university. He said that this, coupled with the announcement of free education for all poor students, would open the gates of leaning.

“This will turn the tide against poverty, underdevelopment and low quality of life amongst our people,” asserted Masina.
