TRAFFIC ALERT: R24 west closed following accident

The slippery road surface needs to be decontaminated and the wreckage must be removed

The R24 freeway westbound just after the Van Riebeeck Road on/off ramp on top of N12 bridge leading towards the Gillooly`s interchange has been closed for traffic.

William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Management Services, said a multi-load articulated truck jack-knifed after crashing into the concrete barrier, rupturing its diesel tank before catching alight.

Two crew members were hospitalised with serious but stable injuries. Both were taken to Arwyp after intervention by Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services medics and rescue teams.

The accident happened around midnight. “It is expected that it might take several hours before the scene is cleared. This will negatively impact on the early morning traffic flow,” Ntladi said.

The slippery road surface needs to be decontaminated and the wreckage must be removed.

Motorists are encouraged to use the Van Riebeeck Road off-ramp leading to the N12 westbound as an alternative route.
