Baby killed in car accident

Two schoolchildren, an elderly woman and a toddler were killed in two separate incidents on the morning of November 23 in Ekurhuleni.

Ekurhuleni emergency services from Rynfield and Daveyton fire stations responded to a horrendous crash involving two vehicles on Fifth Street in Cloverdene, Benoni.

William Ntladi, DEMS spokesperson, said the crash happened around 7.53am.

“Two seven-seater vehicles had collided with each other. One was transporting 14 schoolchildren while the second vehicle had only three occupants inside. The second vehicle was driving out of a house on the street,” said Ntladi.

Ntladi said two female learners from the first vehicle were declared dead on the scene by the paramedics.

“Twelve others were hospitalised in serious condition.

“The casualties were transported to Sunshine Hospital in Benoni for further medical care,” said Ntladi.

Ntladi said the second incident took place in KwaThema. A six-month-old toddler and an elderly mother, alleged to be the nanny, were instantly killed by a truck at the intersection of Joe Mzamane and Marule streets in Extension Two.

Paramedics declared both patients dead on the scene.

“It is alleged that the woman had a baby on her back as she was walking down the pavement when the incident happened,” said Ntladi.

The causes of both accidents are being investigated by Ekurhuleni traffic officials.
