Don’t ignore fines, warns EMPD

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) is warning motorists not ignore traffic fines.

According to EMPD chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, in Alberton yesterday (Sunday, October 29), between 9am and 1.30pm, at the intersection of Overburry and Swartkoppies roads, 21 motorists with warrants of arrest on unpaid traffic fines were detained and compelled to dig deep into their pockets to pay a total of R17 600 to avoid sleeping in police cells.

Twenty-eight other motorists paid outstanding fines on site, with no warrants issued, totalling R15 520, to ensure that they are on the safe side of the law.

Kgasago urged motorists to be responsible and make an effort to pay outstanding fines.

“We have ensured that facilities to pay fines are available electronically, there are websites which can also be used and each and every town in Ekurhuleni has a walk-in EMPD office at which to pay,” he said.

“If you feel a traffic fine was unfairly issued, you can submit a written representation, see a senior public prosecutor or contest the fine in court.

“Ignoring the fine and hoping that it will disappear is unwise as it could lead to a magistrate issuing a warrant of arrest, leading to your arrest or you forking out a huge unbudgeted amount to stay out of jail.”

The EMPD implores motorists to periodically check the status of their

traffic fines to avoid undesirable consequences.
