Cosmos boss furious about damaged stadium

Dr Jomo Sono, the "king of South African football" and boss of the Jomo Cosmos, could see his attempts to improve the standard of soccer in Vosloorus being dealt a huge blow.

This comes after the Vosloorus Stadium’s pitch was damaged during the Live in Colour Picnic.

The non-sporting event was held by a private company on Saturday, October 14.

On Wednesday, October 18 Kathorus MAIL had a chat with Wiseman Langa, the local community liaison officer of Jomo Cosmos before the game against Real Kings FC. The game was scheduled to take place on October 22.

Langa said: “The state of the pitch is bad. The field is compacted, the grass is damaged and there is broken glass all over the pitch.

“This will put players in danger during the tackles. They might fall and get injured or cut by the glass,” said Langa.

Dr Sono recently announced that his team will return to the stadium to play all its national first division home league games.

Dr Sono also announced his desire to improve the state of township by developing young players from Vosloorus. To show that he wanted to keep his words Jomo Cosmos is currently holding trials every Tuesday and Wednesday to recruit Vosloorus based players.

Langa said they feared that if the Premier Soccer League (PSL) rules the stadium unplayable, Dr Sono will have to find another stadium at which to play.

Kathorus MAIL visited the stadium on the day of the home game for Jomo Cosmos against Real Kings FC on October 22.

The stadium was in a better state than it was on October 18.

But Langa said: “The pitch is still in a bad state. It is not playable. The game will only continue because of the instructions from the PSL,” said Langa.

Despite the bad state of the pitch Jomo Cosmos still won the game by 2-1.

Dr Sono said: “I am excited about the results, even though there were many things that worked against us – including the pitch condition and referees decisions. One of the linesmen took some decisions that worked against us. But my philosophy is, your silence must speak for you.”

Dr Sono said he was very excited about the football displayed by both teams during the second half.
