Meat World responds to allegations
On Sunday, current affairs programme Carte Blanche broadcast allegations that Meat World had tampered with sell-by labels on its products.
In reaction hereto, Meat World has issued the following press release:
Meat World is conducting a thorough investigation into 14 of its stores across Gauteng, North West and Mpumalanga.
Apart from a meat product recall in nine of their stores monitored by the programme for alleged selling of spoiled meat and relabelling of products to extend their sell-by date, the brand is considering defranchising some of its stores if the allegations are serious enough.
In addition, Meat World has appointed leading forensic investigator Dr David Klatzow to analyse the lab report provided by Carte Blanche.
Dr Klatzow questioned the accuracy of the findings by the laboratory.
He also states “the overall bacteriological results do not demonstrate a systemic problem”.
Meat World chief executive officer Angelino Pereira has appointed an independent health and safety organisation to conduct full health and safety audits on each of the stores.
“I took this immediate decision when I was made aware of these allegations.
“My team and I are deeply perturbed by these allegations.
“We will do everything we can to rectify any irregularities.
“Our customers are our family and we take their complaints to heart,” says Pereira.
