The second critically injured patient was from another vehicle involved in the crash and was transported to a medical facility for further treatment.
William Ntladi, the district manager media liaison of Ekurhuleni District and Emergency Management (DEMS), said at 2.44am DEMS responded to a crash alarm on R59 freeway northbound just before Swartkoppies turn off.
“On arrival, it was found that three light motor vehicles were involved in a crash. In one hatchback light motor vehicle, six occupants were accounted for and still trapped inside,” said Ntladi.
He said one other patient (the driver of another vehicle) was hospitalised with critical injuries.
“The rescue team from emergency services had to use jaws of life to recover the deceased and the injured person from the wrecked vehicle,” Ntladi said.
He said an inquest docket has been opened with Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.
