Walk to Read campaign hailed a success

Tshabalala Primary School in Katlehong held the Walk to Read campaign on September 8 to encourage people to read.

Bertha Mahlatji the acting head of department (HOD) of the intermediate phase, said the initiative by the District Department of Education aims to emphasise the importance of reading to the community.

“The purpose of this campaign is to make the community take note of the importance of reading because reading broadens and stimulates the mind.

“People must use their spare time to read or pursue it as a hobby. The more they read the more knowledge they gain,” said Mahlatji.

The campaign started at 10am with learners from Grades One to Seven taking part.

They marched on the streets around the school carrying books and posters with different messages about the importance of reading.

Learners stopped and delivered speeches, recited poems and read books for people who were passing by.

Communities were amazed by the initiative from the school.

Mahlatji concluded by saying people that must not pick up pieces of papers from the floor and throw them away without first reading what is written on them.
