Mob justice claims a life in Zonke

The SAPS in Zonkizizwe, have once again appealed to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

This follows the brutal mob-justice murder of a 24-year-old man on September 1, who was attacked by a gang of men in Zone 4. The suspects who are between 23 and 42 years of age, were arrested soon after the victim died of his wounds in hospital.

According to a police statement released by Capt Mutuku Tema of the Zonkizizwe SAPS, the victim was attacked on August 27, after he was allegedly found inside a room in which his grandmother was asleep.

When confronted, the victim is believed to have fled the scene, but was chased and apprehended by the gang. They then took turns to assault him and later left him lying on the street.

Later, an ambulance was called and took him to the hospital where he was declared dead.

Tema told Kathorus MAIL that a murder docket was opened and four of the suspects were arrested soon thereafter. Tema urged the public to report crime to the police and not to take the law into their own hands.

He warned it was a criminal offence for members of the public to assault a crime suspect. “That is why the police are there,” explained Capt Tema.
