Local school awards excellent runners

Tshabalala Primary School from Katlehong held an award ceremony to reward learners who made it to the district level of the Cross Country Athletics challenge at in Alberton on August 25.

The school awarded learners medals and certificates as a token of appreciation.

Refilwe Tsaagane, the sport organiser at the school, said learners made the school and the entire Katlehong One community proud.

“On August 25 these learners did not only represent Tshabalala Primary School but the whole of Katlehong One. Some of them made it through the district level to represent the Ekurhuleni South at the provincial level at Prestige College in Tshwane,” she said.

She said although not all students awarded with certificates on the day made it to the provincial level of the challenge, she was still proud of them for making it thus far.

“During the elimination stages they competed against the best and they managed to make it to this level. It’s a great achievement on their side,” she said.

Tsaagane did not want to single out those who made it and who did not make it to the provincial stages of the challenge.

She added that the school aims to encourage children to participate in sport.

“We want to raise awareness about the importance of sport. It enhances children’s health and could determine a child’s career because some are gifted in one sport or another. Others are gifted academically. We want those who are gifted in sport only not to feel like we don’t appreciate what they are doing for the school,” Tsaagane concluded.

Sifiso Ngobese, the school principal, said he was happy for the learners who made it to the district level.

“Being discovered here means that they are going to meet the talent scouts in Tshwane who are going to give them international exposure, should they perform well,” Ngobese said.
