Happy Women’s Day, Mama Nelly

Vosloorus Boksburg District Taxi Association (VBDTA) organised a special Women’s Day celebration for Nelly Nelukau on Wednesday, August 9.

Nelukau is the founder of the orphanage Dzulani Children Care, in Dindela Section, Vosloorus.

Ntsikelelo Nene, a social auxiliary worker and manager at Dzulani Children Care, said they wanted to do something special for Nelukau.

“VBDTA came up with the idea of celebrating this day with our CEO (Nelukau). They did a lot of things for the orphans here. They brought plates, decorations, food and even cooked for the orphans,” said Nene.

He said the VBDTA wanted to give back to the orphanage.

“Nelukau did something good for children. She turned her home into an orphanage. She did all this for children she didn’t even know. She fed them from her own pocket and she has been doing so for the past six years,” said Nene.

He said the Department of Social Welfare has turned down Nelukau’s requests for funding a number of times.

“Being turned down never discouraged her. She kept on doing something good for the orphans. That is why we have decided to join hands with VBDTA and do something special for her,” said Nene.

He said they want Dzulani to be the best children’s home in the country.

“We are committed to so with or without help from the Department of Social Welfare. We will keep on working voluntarily and make sure that our CEO’s dreams come true,” said Nene.

Bongani Nxumalo, assistant secretary of VBDTA Mainline Route, said they always celebrate Women’s Day.

“We always do something good for women who are doing good things for the community. This year we came here and did something special for Nelukau, the children and the workers of this home. We want her to know that even though other people might not see the good work she does, we recognise it.

“We believe that what we are is because of the community. Nelukau is part of the community and is doing something for the same community we are serving. As a token of appreciation we donated groceries and prepared the decorations for this event to be a success,” said Nxumalo.

“We have also committed to giving R1 000 per month to the orphanage. The money will assist in buying groceries. We know it won’t go a long way but it will assist here and there,” said Nxumalo.

VBDTA also bought presents for the orphans.

“We hope Nelukau will enjoy this Mother’s Day specially organised for her,” said Nxumalo.

Dzulani Children Care is still looking for good Samaritans who can come forward and provide any form of help to the centre. They have been pleading for help since 2012 with no success.

Nelukau runs the centre with the money from her own pocket, with a little bit of help from individuals.
