Katlehong Tech holds motivational talks for girl learners

Katlehong Technical School held a ceremony to motivate female matric learners at the school on Friday, August 4.

The school choir provided the music while learners from lower grades entertained the crowd with drama and jokes.

Principal Jaco Opperman said they wanted to do something special for the girl learners because the school does not hold a matric dance.

“We had to do it in line with Women’s Month. I invited local female station commanders to motivate them,” said Opperman.

Opperman said he wants girls to learn to be independent.

“I don’t want you to depend on men,” Opperman said in his speech. “At least men must depend on you.

“Not all of you will afford to go to universities, but I would like you to know that it does not mark the end of the world for you. There are so many things that you can do and be successful in life with or without university,” he said.

Various female speakers shared the stage with him to deliver motivational speeches.

Busisiwe Jankie said learners must stop comparing themselves with others.

“Comparison is a thief of happiness. If you compare yourself to the next person you will be stealing your happiness away from you.”

She told them not to look down upon themselves.

“If you look down upon yourselves you will make it easy for the next person to pull you down,” said Jankie.

Lehlohonolo Moleli, the chairman of the school governing body, said young women are targets of some men out there.

“It makes me furious to read about men who are killing women day in and day out. Sometimes that is caused by women depending a lot on men. What I would advise you to do is get that education. If you have education, you have freedom,” said Moleli.

Among the speakers who were present on the day were Sgt Lindile Moloi, Brig Phumla Mdlankomo (station commander at Katlehong Police Station), Col Roline Opperman (Vispol commander at Elsburg Police Station), Capt Antoinete Foord (Brackendowns Police Station) and WO Tracy Meinties.
