Taxi indaba held at Vosloorus Civic Centre

Vosloorus SAPS, Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Vosloorus Boksburg District Taxi Association (VBDTA) held a Taxi Indaba at Vosloorus Civic Centre on July 19.

Large numbers of izinduna from local hostels also attended the meeting.

Vosloorus Station Commander, Brig Themba Denge chaired the meeting and was assisted by Lt Col David Nxumalo of the Vosloorus detectives and Wiseman Langa of Vosloorus CPF.

Communication official at Vosloorus Police Station, Capt Piet Rossouw, said this was the second meeting after the one held at Vosloorus SAPS Barrack Hall on June 11.

“The main purpose was to bring about a solution to taxi violence taking place in Vosloorus.

“We invited izinduna from local hostels because most of the killings are happening at the hostels where most of the taxi drivers stay,” said Rossouw.

He said they want to build a solid relationship with the local VBDTA.

Bheki Mbatha, the VBDTA chairperson said they are concerned about the killing of taxi owners and drivers.

“We would like the police to intervene because people do not fear the law,” said Mbatha.

He said the police are not doing enough.

“We sat in the meeting with Denge on the July 19 but on July 23, there was a horrible shoot-out at Emazulwin Hostel where four people were shot. One died during that shoot-out while the other three, including an innocent woman, are fighting for their lives at the local hospital,” said an emotional Mbatha.

He said the suggested solution to the matter was to involve the minister of police, Fikile Mbalula.

“I think Denge has the power to get Mbalula to the next meeting. I think Mbalula is the one who can change the law and make it harder on the criminals,” said Mbatha.

He said the law of this country is soft on the killers and hard on the victims.
