Alleged robber wounded in shootout with police at Chris Hani Mall

Vosloorus SAPS gave chase to a suspect who robbed the owner of Coco Cash Loans of an undisclosed amount of money on Friday, June 30 at Chris Hani Mall in Vosloorus.

Communication official at Vosloorus SAPS, Capt Piet Rossouw, said the owner of Coco Cash Loan, who is a Chinese national, was busy opening his shop for the day.

“He was confronted by an armed man while trying to unlock the business front door. The suspect pointed a firearm at the owner, grabbed the bag from him and took the undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene. Fortunately, the members of SAPS were nearby and gave chase,” said Rossouw.

He said while the suspect was on the run he dropped the bag of money and kept on running.

“The bag was recovered by the police who gave it back to the owner. The police members kept on chasing until near Chris Hani Mall Taxi Rank where the suspect stopped and started shooting at the police. The police shot back and wounded him on the upper body,” said Rossouw.

One firearm was seized from the suspect after he was wounded during an exchange of fire with the police on Friday, June 30 at Chris Hani Mall Taxi Rank.

He said the suspect was taken by ambulance to Telle Mogoerane Hospital in Vosloorus.

“He remained under the police guard until he recovered. The cases of armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition were opened against the suspect,” said Rossouw.

He also said one firearm and four live rounds were seized.

Rossouw thanked Sgt Paul Xie, who is also a Chinese national, from Bedfordview SAPS, for assisting with interpretation when the police were taking the statement from the victim.
