Four schools, including Masithwalisane Secondary, Erasmus Monareng Secondary, Thuto-Lesedi Secondary and Lethulwazi Secondary Schools, participated in soccer and netball matches that took place at Vosloorus Stadium.
Themba Sibeko, one of the organisers, said the schools that took part in the finals were granted the highest number of bursaries.
“A total of 20 bursaries and eight scholarships were up for grabs. The runners-up got two bursaries and four scholarships, while the winners got four bursaries and four scholarships. And a total of six bursaries were won by students for their schools through a raffle competition,” said Sibeko.
Lethulwazi Secondary School won the tournament after defeating Erasmus Monareng Secondary Schools in the finals and took home four bursaries and four scholarships. In addition, they won two bursaries for participating in the tournament to make up the total prize of six bursaries and four scholarships.
Erasmus Monareng Secondary School got the runner-up prize of two bursaries and four scholarships. In addition to that, they got an additional two bursaries for participating in the tournament.
Thuto-Lesedi Secondary and Masithwalisane Secondary Schools each received two bursaries for participating in the tournament.
Lesibana Ramokolo, a teacher at Lethulwazi Secondary School, said he was very excited about his school being crowned the champions.
“I am very happy not only because we were crowned the champions, but also because of the way all schools played on the day. They gave us a run for our money.
“About winning bursaries, I am over the moon, as there are learners who are smart but are struggling financially. They are unable to proceed with further education after completing matric.
“We need more companies like One Goal Foundation to organise such events every year,” said Ramokolo.
He said the bursaries are going to be shared between Grade 12 learners, going to those with good academic performances and those who are struggling financially.
Abonga Sobopha, a Grade 12 learner from Erasmus Monareng Secondary School, who won a bursary for his school in the raffle competition, was very happy.
“I am very excited about winning the bursary for my school. If I was to be awarded a bursary myself, I would go to culinary school and study towards being a professional chef, because I love cooking,” said Sobopha.
He said anyone who is awarded a bursary at his school will have his support.
Londiwe Nzimande, who was the MC and handed out the prizes, said: “I wish good luck to all the schools for taking part and for winning the bursaries.”
