Power Walk held at Spruitview

Shadow of Light held a power walk at the Spruitview Multi-Purpose Park on Saturday, June 3, to raise awareness against abuse, killing and human trafficking of women and children.

The ceremony was held in line with Child Protection Week which started on Monday, May 29.

Sbusiso Ndala, the organiser of the event, said they also want to plead with men to stop violence against women and to prevent the senseless killing of innocent women all over the country.

“Men are taking advantage of women just because they are unable to defend themselves. I organised this event to plead with men to stop these barbaric acts. At the same time I would like women to know that not all men out there are trash. That is why I organised men to be part of the celebration,” said Ndala.

Different activities such as a power walk, wall climbing and self-defence classes were organised for men, women and children and will continue to be provided twice a month.

Ndala said he felt very bad that the instructor who was supposed to conduct self-defence classes, did not arrive at the event because of other commitments.

“The thing is, that was the most important part of the day, because I wanted women to learn how to defend themselves when being attacked by men,” said Ndala. “But he apologised and I thank him for that,” he went on. “Self-defence classes will be provided daily at Spruitview Mult-Purpose Park during the week between 7am and 9am from Monday till Friday,” said Ndala.

He encouraged all women to come and attend. “Those who would like to know more about classes must contact me Sibusiso Ndala on 063 4300208,” he said.

Women and children participated in different activities that were organised to take place on the day.

Itumeleng Tsisa, one of the women who attended the celebration, said it is high time women stand up and fight for themselves.

“Women must learn to defend themselves when being abused. Men also must know that they are the ones who can stop abuse by just protecting women and children,” said Tsisa.
