Robbers exchange fire with guards

A group of five men attempted to rob the Markham store at Chris Hani Crossing Mall in Vosloorus on Thursday, May 4 .

According to communications official at Vosloorus Police Station, Capt Piet Rossouw, the attempt failed.

“Two employees and two customers were threatened with firearms and forced to the room where the safe is kept. The manager was also threatened and forced to open the safe. Fortunately, a third employee had just left a few minutes before the attempted robbery to bank the money that was kept in the safe. The suspects took R200 that is normally used as a float,” said Rossouw.

He said the suspects loaded all the cellphones and tablets to the value of about R50 000 in two big carry bags.

“When they left the business two of the shopping centre’s undercover security guards spotted the suspects struggling to carry the bags to the waiting car. The guards suspected that there was something wrong and identified themselves,” said Rossouw.

He said one guards pointed his firearm at the suspects.

“The suspects dropped the bags and started running and hid in a nearby store.

“The armed security guard and one armed suspect exchanged fire. Fortunately no one was injured or was shot,” said Rossouw.

He said the suspects fled the scene empty-handed.

“SAPS arrived at the scene. During their observation, they discovered two vehicles that were going to be used by the suspects to get away.

“SAPS are following the lead but the suspects are still on the run,” said Rossouw.

He said the case of business robbery and attempted murder have been opened for further investigation.

The investigation is continuing.
