The recent appointment of the first female police head in Katlehong, Brig. Phumla Mdlankomo, by the SAPS is another sign of progress for women in the police force.

One can only sing high praises for Brig. Mdlankomo for being the first female to lead the police in a township like Katlehong, with all its crime problems. And the SAPS must also be commended for their progressive and non-sexist appointment of a female station head.

As a woman, reading Brig. Mdlankomo’s story in the recent Kathorus MAIL of March 8, I felt proud. South Africa can only move forward by placing capable women in leading roles within its ranks.

To the new station commander, I wish to express my sincere appreciation and hope her male colleagues will give her all the support she needs to succeed in her new endeavours. Also her open-door policy will bring her even closer to the community she has been assigned to serve.

I have no doubt that the community of Katlehong will embrace Brig. Mdlankomo with open arms.
