Dzulani Children Care Centre, an orphanage based in Dindela Section in Vosloorus, is in need of financial support.

The orphanage held a special ceremony on Saturday, March 4, to ask for a helping hand.

Nelly Nelukau, the founder of the orphanage, uses her own house to home more than 12 children between the ages of 14 months and 24.

She said she felt a need to start the orphanage after the disappearance of her son Nkanyiso.

“After the loss of my son in April 2005, I developed a love for kids who are not my own. As a result I started this orphanage in 2012 from my own pocket, without any help from the government. Ever since, I have worked with more than 50 children. I’ve been applying to get funding but never got approval,” said Nelukau.

Nelukau said her son Nkanyiso never came back after going out to a party with friends.

“Ever since I never heard from him, I don’t even know what happened to him,” she said.

Ingrid Heydenryck, assistant director at the centre, said there are many orphanages in Vosloorus but Dzulani needs the most help.

“The orphanage is run from Nelukau’s home, which she bought from the bank. She is paying a bond, but she managed to make it a home for so many homeless children. And she does that out of the goodness of her heart. She does not want to be thanked or praised for that. She is not looking to gain out of it. Nelukau and her husband (Gideon) are running the place with their own hard-earned money,” said Heydenryck.

Heydenryck said the home is in need of plumbing, electronic repairs, window repairs, washing machines, freezers and fridges, bedding, office equipment, beds, gas stoves, transport to take children to school, as well as painting.

“No amount of help or equipment is too small. Any help will be highly appreciated,” she said.

Actor Mandla Hlatshwayo, who played Siphiwe in Generations, said Nelukau is one of a kind.

“Because of Nelukau’s unconditional love, she resigned from her work as a nurse because she wanted to be close to these children,” said Hlatshwayo.

Nelukau thanked her husband Gideon for allowing her to use their house as a home to so many children.

“I am so thankful to God for a husband like him,” said Nelukau.

Nelukau pleaded with community members for assistance.

“Even companies that can help, please come forward. These children have no one and they need your help,” she said.

She said her house is open to any homeless children out there.

“There is still a place for them. No matter the age,” she said.
