Pride as Kathorus matric students pass
It is that time of the year again where matric students are getting results of their final exams they wrote last year. This year results were announced on Wednesday, January 4 and were published on Thursday, January 5.
The Kathorus MAIL visited the schools that made the Kathorus community proud in 2015, to see if they improved on their results. And, even though there was an improvement in the overall results, there was a drop in individual performances.
According to the deputy principal of Lethulwazi Secondary School in Vosloorus, Buyekezwa Makhuba, the overall school results have improved compared with last year.
“Last year our overall pass was 88 per cent, whereas this year’s is 89.3 per cent. Out of 153 learners who wrote exams, 138 passed. We have five distinctions in mathematics and physical science.
“We have more than 38 A’s in the whole school,” said Makhuba.
Makhuba thanked all the stakeholders of the school for the wonderful working relationship.
“I would like to thank all the families of the teachers for allowing them to be at the school until 6pm every day for the whole year and on weekends as well as during holidays. Not forgetting the school governing body for supporting the school with Learner Teacher Support Material (LTSM) that the school needed to do well.
“I won’t forget to thank the general staff within the school for always being on time and keeping the school very clean. It would have been difficult if it was not for them. They made the school environment very clean and conducive to teaching and learning.
“Neighbours from around the school have also been very supportive. They never kept quiet if they saw something wrong happening within the school,” Makhuba said.
Makhuba added that they should have achieved 100 per cent because of the support they received from the all the stakeholders of the school.
The top achiever at the school, Bongiwe Mbuyisa, said she had mixed feelings.
“Being the top performer makes me happy, but the fact that I didn’t meet the targets I set for myself makes me feel disappointed. I had set the targets of five distinctions with a pass percentage of 90 per cent and above per subject,” said Mbuyisa.
Mbuyisa, who got three distinctions in mathematics, accounting and business studies, said her next destination is Wits University and that she would like to study to become a chartered accountant.
Mbuyisa told Kathorus MAIL how she got it right and at the same time gave advice to all other learners who are going to write matric in 2017.
“It is do-able. You only need self-discipline and to believe in yourself. There is nothing you can’t do in life if you believe in yourself. Punctuality and focus put me where I am today,” she said.
Sthembile Koma, Mbuyisa’s business studies teacher, sang her praises.
“Mbuyisa is one of the best-behaved learners the school has produced. She always attended all the school programmes that are meant to assist learners, and is very punctual. She showed a sense of responsibility since Grade 10,” said Koma.
Mzodidi Fumbatha, the principal of Iketsang Secondary School in Katlehong, said his school results this year improved by more than two per cent.
“We received 79 per cent last year and this year we attained 80.20 per cent. Out of 194 learners who wrote, only three failed and 191 passed. Thirty-nine qualified for a bachelor’s degree, 89 qualified for a diploma, 33 qualified for higher education certificates, 36 qualified for supplementary exams and only three failed.
“We got distinctions in six subjects: mathematics, physical science, history, SiXhosa, life orientation and tourism,” said Fumbatha.
Mamello Motsoeneng, one of the top performers at Iketsang Secondary School, said she was happy with her achievements.
“All that the next matriculants need to do is avoid the temptations of boyfriends and girlfriends and drugs and just focus on their studies,” said Motsoeneng.
