However, the owner ignored two SMSes from his vehicle-tracking company, brushing them off as a false alarm. Meanwhile, the thieves were busy meddling with his Toyota Hilux double cab’s ignition after breaking into the vehicle. By the time the owner was done with the doctor, the vehicle had vanished.
Fortunately, swift action by the EMPD Loss Control officer, SAPS Rapid Response members and Tracker SA personnel resulted in the stolen vehicle being tracked down to Etwatwa in the Benoni area. Tracking signals emitted by the Toyota Hilux pointed officers to Sambo and Masemola streets in Etwatwa, where the vehicle was recovered at 1pm.
The getaway vehicle used by the thieves – a Chevrolet LDV – was confiscated along with sophisticated devices comprising computer boxes, ignition gadgets and ignition keys for Toyota and VW vehicles. These devices in the wrong hands are used to steal vehicles.
Two suspects found disassembling the stolen Hilux in an attempt to locate the tracking system device were arrested. Both the recovered Hilux and the getaway Chevrolet LDV were found fitted with false number plates.
A charge of possession of a stolen vehicle as well as possession of implements used in vehicle break-ins was laid against the pair at Etwatwa police station. The suspects, aged from 33 and 40 from Katlehong and Spruitview, are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.
