SAPS officer nabbed for hijacked Polo

On Saturday, February 20, around 11am, a man in his VW Polo was waved down by two males and a female known to him who requested a lift to be dropped off in Katlehong.

The driver of the Polo obliged, but later told the police he was taken by surprise when

one of the men pointed a firearm at him and took his VW Polo by force. He was jettisoned from his vehicle at the entrance of Katlehong near Huntersfield stadium.

Information subsequently gathered led to the arrest of six suspects, including a 40-year-old SAPS member found with the hijacked vehicle at his home in Protea Glen, Soweto. Three of the suspects were rounded up in Katlehong where a 9mm pistol with filed off serial numbers was recovered, while the other two were apprehended in Palm Ridge.

All the arrests and the recoveries took place between on 22 February around 10pm and on the morning around 1.30am.

The five suspects nabbed in Katlehong and Palm Ridge claimed that the hijacked VW Polo was bought from them by the arrested SAPS member for R5 000.

All the six suspects are in their 30s save the arrested SAPS member, who is 40 years old. They were charged at Germiston police station with possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

The arrests were affected by the EMPD Task Team members in collaboration with the Germiston SAPS Detective Branch members.
