‘Vehicles not allowed to have same registration number’ – EMPD

No vehicles, regardless of whether the make, model or colour are common, may have the same registration number.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s (EMPD) Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said that no vehicles, regardless of whether the make, model or colour are common, may have the same registration number.

He said this in response to concerns regarding vehicles bearing the same registration number.

“Each motor vehicle on the NaTis system has its unique registration licence number, vehicle register number and a vin number. If anybody has sighted, or has knowledge of such vehicles, (bearing the same registration number), they are requested to make the authorities aware. It is a serious criminal offence that is punishable by law. It would mean that the said vehicle has been cloned, or it is done deliberately with the aim of trying to hide the true identity of a vehicle acquired by illegal means,” he said.
