SWIFT action by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s (EMPD) Community Service and Anti-Cable Theft Unit resulted in the confiscation of thousands of copies of counterfeit DVDs in Katlehong.
Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, the EMPD spokesperson, said they received a tip-off from a reliable source and decided to act on it at 06:00 on Monday, October 26.
As a result, two suspects were arrested when they were found to be in possession of computers, DVD players, printers and 8 000 counterfeit DVDs, estimated to be worth around R150 000.
He said the EMPD raided a house in the Radebe section where they first discovered about 4 000 counterfeit DVDs, two computer towers, two computer monitors, a DVD player and three printers.
This resulted in the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect who was charged at Ramokunupi Police Station in Katlehong.
“Before being charged, the suspect decided to reveal the place where his partner in crime resides,” said Chief Supt Kgasago.
EMPD police members went to the house in the Sikhosana section, at 06:30, and on searching the premises, they found the same number of counterfeit DVDs as well as similar equipment to that found in the Radebe section.
A 33-year-old was arrested and charged at the Katlehong North Police Station.
Kgasago said both men face charges of contravening the Films and Publications Act No.65 of 1996 relating to producing, being in possession and distribution of counterfeit goods.
They are expected to make a brief appearance in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court soon.
Chief Supt Kgasago further said the police will also investigate any traces of images that might be of a pornographic nature.
