Celebrating Oliver Tambo’s legacy

The month of October is full of events celebrating the life and legacy of Oliver Tambo.

CITY of Ekurhuleni is celebrating the life and legacy of the late icon, Oliver Reginald Tambo during the month of October. The month-long celebrations began on Friday, October 9, with the finale of the Slam Poetry competition at the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct, a national heritage site in Wattville.

The official opening of the OR Tambo Narrative Centre, at the cultural precinct, on Thursday, October 22, will take visitors on a journey through the life and times of Tambo.

Tambo’s enthusiasm for choral music was honoured when choirs from across the City of Ekurhuleni competed in the Ekurhuleni Regional Choral Competition on October 11 at the Germiston City Hall. The East Rand Twelve Apostles Church in Christ (TACC) choir won the regional competition and secured a spot to perform at the Ekurhuleni Melting Pot Choral Music Festival taking place on October 31 and November 1 at Carnival City in Brakpan.

On October 24, over 60 learners from Ekurhuleni, Alfred Nzo Municipality, OR Tambo District Municipality as well as learners from Lusaka in Zambia will converge at Willowmore High School in Benoni for a Schools Debate competition.

On Tuesday, October 27, the City of Ekurhuleni will pay homage to Oliver and Adelaide Tambo at a wreath laying ceremony at their grave site at the Tamboville Cemetery in Wattville. Later that evening a memorial lecture will also be held to reflect on the significant role of Tambo.

The celebrations of the month will culminate in a theatre production on Thursday, October 29, at the Springs Theatre, where audiences will be able to watch an operatic interpretation of Tambo’s life.
