Nyaope – the silent killer

It is the word on every concerned parent’s lips, it is the one substance addicts yearn for and it is fast becoming the best selling drug in townships.

KATHORUS -Nyaope has become known as the silent killer on the township streets and in an effort to know more about the users and the drug, the MAIL hit the streets to investigate.

It is clear that the highly addictive nyaope drug is like any other because it ruins and kills at a devastating rate. While among users, you spot those who are suffering from withdrawal symptoms as they get stomach cramps, break out in sweat and vomit. Some say they try to go off nyaope but it is too difficult and most of them cannot afford to go to a rehabilitation centre.

With many of the users being homeless, they revert to crime to feed their habit. Getting caught by SAPS or the community and suffering the punishment of mob justice is no deterrent. The addicts are in need of a fix and claim they will do anything to get it.

There are users who smoke nyaope with a mixture of dagga and others inject the drug. In light of the circumstances most of these addicts live in, those injecting the drug are at risk of sharing needles.

Word on the street is that some SAPS members are involved in the selling of nyaope and when some of the pushers are arrested, they will be back on the street in a day or two.

Nyaope is available in many schools and parents are without a solution. The drug has become an ill running through the community like a virus and it is silently killing the youth on the streets.
