Mayor condemns Tembisa taxi violence

On Thursday July 30, Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni condemned the taxi violence in Tembisa.

GERMISTON – During his speech in council on Thursday July 30, Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mondli Gungubele condemned the taxi violence in Tembisa.

During his speech, the mayor said, “Allow me to take this opportunity to condemn the taxi violence that has claimed the life of a 45-year-old woman and left three other people injured in Esangweni area in Tembisa.”

Following the taxi shootout it was revealed earlier that the woman who was killed leaves behind an 18-year-old son and a 12-year-old daughter.

The Tembisan earlier reported, “Ms Mahlangu was employed as a librarian at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).”

Gungubele described the violence as senseless. He said, “I hope that the security agencies will move swiftly to arrest those that are behind it.

“Furthermore it is our sincere wish that feuding parties get together soon to peacefully iron out their differences. The barrel of a gun must never be seen as a solution to any problem.”

Meanwhile, Shadow MEC for Roads and Transport in Gauteng, Neil Campbell believes that preventing disputes and violence among taxi operators requires a proactive approach from both the departments of community safety and roads and transport.

He said in a statement, “Disputes over routes are easier solved at the negotiating table and through proactive government action, instead of trying to crisis manage incidence of violence whenever they flare up.”
