Mountain Robbers claim victory at the Woza Nazo tournament

MRD walked home with 18 soccer jerseys, silver medals and R2 660 cash prize.

Community Stars FC hosted a three-day Woza Nazo u-20 tournament to celebrate Heritage Day at the Tsietsi Extension Nine grounds in Palm Ridge.

At least 12 teams competed in this tournament, including Community Stars, One Heart United, Sabelo Stars, Tigers Academy, K6 Future Stars, Young Chelsea, Mountain Robbers Development (MRD), Triple S, Ponego, New Word United, Skycity and Kathorus Warriors.

MRD won 5-4 against K6 Future Stars on penalty shoot-outs after they played to an all-zero draw.

They walked home with 18 soccer jerseys, silver medals and R2 660 cash prize. K6 Future Stars in second place scooped silver medals and a R1 260 cash prize.

The head coach of MRD, Pule Mofokeng, said the tournament has been on their radar since they lost in the final with the u-17 division in their previous tournament.

Mountain Robbers Development goalkeeper Sekgotlaboraga ‘Khonkhot’ Pheagane saved his side during the penalty shoot-out.

“The year 2021 is our time. We play in a competitive league and it prepared us for this tournament. We could not lose it again this year, we had a mandate and a mission to complete. MRD is a good team with good players. We have to maintain the standard of the team.”

He said it is a great feeling to be on top, but they will not get ahead of themselves. A disciplined team has capabilities of doing everything, he added.

The tournament organiser and Community Stars coach, Sipho Ndlovu, said this tournament was a way of motivating the youth to challenge themselves to seek their purpose.

“It also aimed to raise awareness of drugs and alcohol abuse because most of our youth are getting involved in substance abuse and crime. This is because it seems like there is no other option for them, but everyone has a purpose and sports can help children find their purpose,” said Ndlovu.
