WATCH: Phake Youth Club needs help raising funds

The club has a soccer team with two divisions, which are u-11 and u-17. It also recently formed a netball team with three divisions.

Phake Youth Club (PYC) is inviting locals to the Rebuilding the Youth Golf Day fundraiser event.

The club needs assistance to raise funds to refurbish the netball court at Tshabalala Primary School.

The funds will also contribute to buying 29 pairs of soccer boots, 24 netball shoes and kits for the young future sports stars. The fundraiser will be held at Germiston Golf Course on September 19 at 11:00.

PYC was formed in 2020 by a group of boys and girls from Ward 49 around Phake, Phooko, Mopedi, Hlahatsi, Motsamai and Tsholo sections in Katlehong.

The club has a soccer team with two divisions, which are u-11 and u-17. It also recently formed a netball team with three divisions, which are u-11, u-14 and u-17.

The coordinator of PYC, Dikeledi Kekana, said they launched the youth club in May this year when they hosted a top four tournament, which was a huge success.

“We also have a budding book club, which we also hope to grow and make bigger and better. We are in discussion about other sporting ventures like starting an adult’s athletics club,” said Kekana.

Challenges

Their challenge is providing the children with sports kits.

“Our boys do not have soccer boots and our netball team does not have any uniform. Our major challenge is sporting facilities. Our soccer grounds are poorly maintained, some of them do not even look like soccer grounds,” Kekana.

“When it comes to netball, it’s a nightmare. There are no netball courts, we have asked Tshabalala Primary School to grant us access to use its netball court, and since the court is inside the school, it is going to be difficult for us to host tournaments,” she added.

“We hope to have better sports facilities in our township like other places do.”
