Emirates Lions resume training under Covid-19 protocols

Lions back at training.

Training at Emirates Lions has taken on a new look for both players and staff members.

Officially given the go-ahead to resume with training by South African Rugby, eight teams which includes the Lions have commenced with their training at their stadiums.

After some four months of training at home under supervision of their local franchises, the players are back on the training field, but under strict Covid-19 protocols.

To ensure all runs accordingly on a daily basis, the team doctor monitors the Covid system daily. All players and staff have downloaded and filled out an athlete app upon entry into the stadium which monitors their movement, health and temperature.

Head coach of the Lions Ivan van Rooyen and his players are excited to be back at training for the next phase of the season that will see the eight teams compete a competition format.

“We are rigorous in sticking to and enforcing our ‘fives’ as we start by working on conditioning.  “We have five different gym stations so that every group will have their own station, with the necessary sanitation and cleaning equipment and products,” said van Rooyen.

Van Rooyen said the Emirates Lions will leave nothing to chance and have planned accordingly to ensure they adhere to the safety requirements put in place for professional sports teams by government and SA Rugby.

They are training in groups of five, in the gym and on the training field, where balls and gym equipment are cleaned continuously to ensure all necessary safety protocols are met. In the gym, all players wear masks and only with rigorous running are the masks set aside temporarily.

The same five players will be together at all times and they train in the same space every day.
