We will win this league, says Sono

Confident Jomo Cosmos (Ezenkosi) boss Jomo Sono believes his team will be crowned the National First Division (NFD) champions at the end of the season.

Despite the 2-1 loss to Ajax Cape Town (the Urban Warriors) at home (Vosloorus Stadium) on August 19 in the league opener, the “Black Prince” of South African football still promised his fans that he does not see any team that will stand on Ezenkosi’s way of gaining promotion to the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

He said he has seen two NFD games that were played on Saturday.

“All teams involved did not play good football like the way we did. Even Ajax Cape Town, the team I thought would cause a threat in our league clash did not play as good as it was expected of them. If this is the way they are going to play the whole season, I don’t see them causing a trouble to us,” said Sono, the former Orlando Pirates player.

He added: “The loss today was caused by individual errors and the fact that we lost a couple of players. The new players are still not combining well. Other good players we bought to replace those who left are still waiting for their work permits,” he said.

The results that saw Ezenkosi suffer defeat in the hands of the Urban Warriors did seem to raise any concerns to the Ezenkosi faithful.

They seemed to have a lot of faith in their team.

Alex Mokhele, one of Ezenkosi loyal supporters, said the team lost its best players, but it still has not lost its supporters.

“I might not be happy with the way the players lost the game that they should have won easily, but I am happy with the new players; they are all good. As soon as they get a chance to get together with other players, the team will produce good results. We lost a couple of good players but I am happy with the new signings, they are even better,” said Mokhele.

A new-look Ezenkosi side which had more than seven new players in their starting eleven, fought hard although some of the players showed inexperience.

Key players from the home side such as Ange Lebahi, Riaan Hanamub and Chibuike Ohizu, were absent due to permit issues.

Ezenkosi trailed behind with a first half lone goal scored by Samuel Julies following a defensive mistake by Ezenkosi defenders.

Ezenkosi used a different approach in the second half and became more dangerous in attack. As a result, their efforts paid off with less than 10 minutes left to the end of the second half when Isaac Nhlapo was judged to have brought down Tebogo Mabula in the box.

Ezenkosi captain, Inky Masuku, stepped up and scored an equaliser from the penalty spot.

Things again turned sour towards the dying minute of the game when Ezenkosi defence made another mistake that cost them to concede another goal that earned Ajax a 2-1 victory with one minute left on the clock.
